The Electric Motor Vehicle Company (EMVC) is excited to announce the opening of its new retail showroom in Invercargill Central Mall, making its popular GeoByke electric bikes more accessible to Southlanders and visitors alike.

Bringing GeoByke Closer to Shoppers and Tourists

Managing Director and engineer Alex de Boer designed the GeoByke range to be an affordable, rugged e-bike option tailored specifically to Southland’s unique terrain and climate. While the bike components are manufactured in China, all GeoByke e-bikes are carefully assembled right here in Invercargill, ensuring quality and reliability.

Previously, EMVC’s Avenal location was a little out of the way for most customers, so this new showroom places GeoByke e-bikes right in the heart of the city—near shopping centers, hotels, and local attractions—making it easier for locals and tourists to view, test, and rent bikes.

“We’ve got bikes for every occasion, as long as it’s electric,” said de Boer, “and there’s more variety on the way.”

A Storefront That Shows Off Southland Pride

Located in the space formerly occupied by the Toot Sweets pop-up store, the showroom’s fresh and bright design complements the rugged, high-performance bikes on display. Maps highlighting popular Southland cycling trails line the walls, inspiring riders to explore the stunning local outdoors.

The store will be managed by Joshua Haggerty, former Torpedo 7 manager and professional cyclist, who brings expert knowledge to help customers find the perfect GeoByke model to suit their needs.

Built for Southland’s Hills and Trails

GeoByke bikes feature powerful motors and long-range batteries — offering up to 80km per charge, depending on usage and terrain. Whether commuting through the city or tackling steep hills and rural tracks, riders can count on the GeoByke’s “grunt” to get the job done.

Designed by an Engineer, Built for Sustainability

Alex de Boer’s engineering background drove the development of GeoByke bikes from frustration with unreliable imported e-bikes. His design philosophy focuses on using common, easy-to-source parts for simple, sustainable maintenance and repair.

Currently, EMVC is developing a robust lithium-ion battery specifically for farm use — encased in a stainless steel box resistant to punctures and corrosive substances like animal urine. The battery is designed for quick repair, with servicing possible within 30 minutes.

De Boer is also collaborating with local solar and wind energy providers to integrate clean energy solutions, highlighting EMVC’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

A Paperless, Modern Business

Even the showroom’s operations reflect a modern mindset, running completely paperless — a small but important step in reducing environmental impact.

“For an old bugger like me, it’s hard to pull me into,” joked de Boer, “but it’s the right thing to do.”
